Stand Out With The Seiko Astron

Seiko is more than just a household brand name; they’re a company built on a legacy of proven watchmaking and Japanese craftsmanship, staking their reputation on each timepiece crafted. It’s hard to even imagine someone who hasn’t heard of the name before, nor seen at least one modern luxury watch made by them, even if they weren’t an enthusiast or collector.

But despite that, most people still don’t know the real story behind the Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches and their legacy since Seiko’s founding.

Futuristic wrist watches and the Astron legacy

Seiko introduced the world’s first quartz wristwatch in 1969, called the “Astron” or more specifically, the Seiko Quartz-Astron 35SQ model. Nothing short of style and class, this was an engineering marvel that also prompted Seiko to patent the design and technology of quartz watches, setting a new global standard that would further propel Seiko into the hallmarks of modern engineering, and how the legacy of Seiko Astron design watches came to be.

By 2012, Seiko reintroduced the Astron lineup to the market, releasing the next generation of modern luxury watches featuring the GPS Solar Technology – A new movement type powered by solar energy and automatic time adjustment based on your current location using GPS positioning.

Astron watches powered by the GPS Solar Technology Movement can also detect time zones as soon as it detects sunlight for accurate time synchronization, making the next-generation Astron timepieces epitomes of premium tech watches.

With a simple press of a button, the Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches can connect and receive signals from GPS satellites to synchronize and adjust time on their own, based on your current location and time zone. The Astron’s GPS Solar movement is also compatible with other satellite technologies, such as the Quasi-Zenith MICHIBIKI satellite system, giving it extensive GPS coverage.

Let’s then take a look at some of the best, futuristic wrist watches from the Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches collection below!

Elegance and grace in foresight: Astron SSH051J1

In the distant future, the most refined and insightful of gentlemen still pay close attention to how they present themselves and how graceful actions should be. Seiko foresaw this and knew better. That’s how the Astron SSH051J1 came to be – designed with emphasis on elegance and subtlety despite the futuristic elements associated with Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches.

Astron SSH051J1 vitals:

Elegantly powerful: Seiko Caliber 5X53 GPS Solar Quartz Movement – Solar-charging with power reserves up to 6 months approx. when fully-charged, power-saving function and overcharging safety feature, GPS signal reception and connectivity for impeccable accuracy at ±15 seconds per month, even without constantly receiving GPS signals.

Premium tech watch functionality and features – Easy synchronization across 39 different time zones via World Time Function and Daylight-Saving Time, Perpetual Calendar until February 28, 2100, Time transfer function and Dual-time feature for quick switching of time between the main dial and sub dial time, day and date windows, GPS-assisted automatic hand alignment, Smart Adjuster Clasp integrated within the three-fold clasp, power reserve and satellite acquisition indicators.

Tenacity and endurance – The Astron SSH051J1 uses stainless steel with the proprietary Seiko super-hard coating for the casing and bands, and dual-curved sapphire glass with super-clear coating treatment, a combination of materials that gives this statement watch lifelong durability.

Size and dimensions – With the casing at just 42mm in diameter, 11.1mm in thickness, an overall lug-to-lug measurement of 47.2mm, and weighing 160g, wearing this timepiece for extended periods is a hassle-free experience.

While packed to the brim with all the premium features that make up an Astron Solar Powered watch, the SSH051J1 still places attention to details and refined subtlety in its design, as seen with the combination of charcoal dial, raised indices, and watch hands with LumiBrite coating, and stainless steel for a simple, yet elegant monochrome aesthetic.

With a 100m water resistance rating and durable materials, the SSH051J1 is guaranteed to last and witness the future it was designed for.

Time-shifted Trailblazer: Astron SSJ009J1

The Astron SSJ009J1 (also marketed as SBXD009 in Japan) is an outlier when it comes to the Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches collection, but in a good way. It immediately stands apart from the other Astron GPS Solar watches due to its dial design and overall composition.

However, this doesn’t mean that the SSJ009J1 falls short in functionality compared to its other forerunners. It captures the first Astron watch’s bezel design with some adjustments, incorporating it with the futuristic elements found on modern Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches, resulting in a contemporary, ‘time-shifted’ look while still carrying the powerful GPS Solar Technology.

Astron SSJ009J1 vitals:

The future of durability and sustainable materials – The Astron SSJ009J1 uses Black PVD Titanium for its casing and bracelet with Seiko’s proprietary DiaShield coating, which virtually prevents most surface scratching and wear, Sapphire Crystal Glass with ‘Super-Clear’ Coating, while the bezel is crafted with Black Ceramic, another lightweight material that’s immune to impacts, scratches, and UV-fading. This futuristic statement watch is also rated at 200m water resistance to match its style.

The power of the sun at your wrist – Powered by the Seiko Caliber 3X22 GPS Solar Quartz Movement capable of charging via sunlight and storing power for up to 6 months when fully charged, and 2 years on power-saving mode which is activated once this timepiece is unable to detect or receive any sunlight within 72 hours, overcharging protection, GPS signal reception and connectivity, and the precision of ±15 seconds per month accuracy without receiving GPS signals. This is photo-voltaic, and GPS technology pushed to the limits of Japanese watch engineering and craftsmanship.

Simple and clean, without compromising functionality – The SSJ009J1 is powered by the Seiko Caliber 3X22 GPS Solar Quartz Movement, a smaller Caliber Movement in all dimensions compared to other movements used in other Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches, allowing for a smaller overall form factor and a simpler, but slick design. It retains the Perpetual Calendar functionality up to February 28, 2100, World Time synchronization across 39 different time zones, date window, Daylight-Saving Time auto adjustment, Flight Mode, and automatic hand synchronization & alignment.

However, the Seiko Caliber 3X22 does not have the Time transfer function and dual-time feature available in the Seiko Caliber 5X53 because the Caliber 3X22 is a simplified GPS Solar movement compared to the Caliber 5X53. Despite this, the Caliber 3X22 also retains the essential GPS Solar features found in other Astron models, and the same deadly accuracy down to leap seconds once it connects to an atomic clock within GPS satellites.

Size matters – The casing measures just 39mm in diameter and 12.3mm thick, making the SSJ009J1 one of the smallest and slimmest Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches to date.

Being the first of its kind among Astron GPS Solar watches in appearance, the Astron SSJ009J1 is a versatile all-rounder considering its functionalities, material, and size, making its slim profile great for sleeved and formal wear as well. The hypoallergenic materials and lighter weight of just 99g compared to its brothers in the collection allow for great comfort when worn for an entire day.

Lastly, its textured dial, coupled with the raised indices, gives it an unexpected depth from a monotone jet-black theme. Both the indices and watch hands are also coated with LumiBrite for that ethereal and enthralling glimmer in low light environments.

The Apex of Seiko’s engineering and craftsmanship

The Seiko Astron Solar Powered Watches reign supreme in both function and form, making them more than just statement watches for men. They are a cut above the rest, standing out from most Quartz Movement watches using technology from tomorrow.
